Should I Detox if I am Pregnant?

Now that we are well into the start of 2019, most of us are looking for ways to freshen up our routines and find healthier habits. There is no doubt that nutrition is a major part of creating a healthier you for the new year (or all year, for that matter!), and detoxing is a common strategy to clean the slate. But what about if you are trying to become pregnant or are expecting a 2019 baby?

First of all, your body naturally detoxes all the time on its own. Evidence tells us that your liver, kidneys, skin, intestines, lungs, and immune system detox themselves all the time, and do the job perfectly when these systems are running as they should. Detox diets are generally expensive, not founded on evidence, and difficult to maintain. They can range from inconvenient to downright dangerous. Besides, they are ineffective for building long-lasting healthy habits that create a lifestyle rooted in health.

This is even more the case during pregnancy. Sure, your systems are working harder than ever to keep up with the needs of not one but two bodies, but I can assure you that they are more than capable of keeping up with the job. While you don't need to help your body detox, now is a great time to boost your health by fine-tuning your diet.

A safe way to "detox" during pregnancy is to simply cut out foods that detract from the health of you and your baby, while focusing on those foods that contribute to a healthy pregnancy and management of chronic disease. What does this look like? Focus on avoiding processed foods, food additives, refined carbohydrates, and added sugars while building your meals around vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, seeds, lean proteins, and healthy fats.

Depending on your specific needs, it may be beneficial to avoid common allergens during this time as well. Now is the time to work with a dietitian to find out what your body needs based on your personal health profile.

As a dietitian (and a pregnant one at that!), I know the importance of refreshing a healthy lifestyle to ensure a healthier start to the new year. Sign up for your free initial phone call today to learn more about how I can help you find a detox regimen that works for your body for the new year!
